Genres of Portraiture

Gen-re (zhän′rə) n.  1. A category of artistic composition marked by a distinctive style, form, or content.

At Mike Guilbault Photography we offer three genres of portraiture to suit your particular style. These genres of portraiture are available for most sessions, including family, individuals or couples, babies and even pets.

Fine Art Black & White

Fine Art Black & White

Fine Art B&W Portraiture

Although we can make any photograph Black & White, we consider our Fine Art Black & White Collection to be those created in the studio specifically for the purpose of delivering a Fine Art Black & White Print.

Black & White prints are available only on our archival, acid-free, "Heirloom" portrait paper or "Master Gallery" canvas. The prints are made with an Advanced B&W printing process to ensure longevity and beautiful tonality. Your Fine Art B&W Portrait will not only last years, but generations.  For more information about our printing methods, visit Our Prints.

The portrait session takes a little longer than a typical session, but we manage every aspect of the portrait, from the pre-session consultation to choose clothing and 'style', to intricate lighting details and compositions during the photo-session, and final editing, retouching and grayscale conversion to black & white. If you're looking for the absolute best, this is it.

Environmental Portraiture

Environmental Portraiture

Environmental Portraits

Outdoor portraits are still popular today and the most asked for style of portraiture we offer. However, environmental isn't restricted to just the great outdoors. We consider environmental to be defined as any location outside of the studio. Do you have a favourite place or space? Think of your home, the cottage, your boat, or even where you work (maybe a family owned business such as a farm, an artist's studio or craftsman's workshop). Themed portraits are popular and include favourite past-times including sports, hobbies or simply relaxing somewhere you call your own.

Environmental portraits are available in all our media choices including the Signature papers, Heirloom paper, or our most popular for outdoor portraits, the Master Gallery canvas. Canvas prints may be displayed with or without a frame.

Studio Classics

Studio Classics

Sometimes it's not feasible to do an outdoor portrait. If you're constrained for time and don't want to take the chance of inclement weather affecting your portrait, or if it's a special occasion where you'd like something a little more formal, or even if you'd like something a little 'off the wall', something with creative or dramatic lighting, our studio is available for just those occasions.

A Classic doesn't have to be stiff or boring either. Classic means we take a time-honoured approach to create a beautiful portrait, with attention to detail and composition to create a timeless, work of art, for you and your family to enjoy for many years.
